A vehicle crossing — often called a dropped kerb — lets you drive safely from the road, across the pavement and onto your property. It has to be built strong enough to take the weight of vehicles without damaging the footway or the services beneath it, and to the specification set by the highway authority.

Approvals
Getting Approval for a Dropped Kerb
Before a dropped kerb can be built over a public footway, the homeowner needs consent from the highway authority — Essex Highways across most of our area. They inspect the site and check things such as visibility, the space for parking on your property, trees and underground services.
If your property is on a classified road you will also need planning permission first. Once consent is granted, the contractor books road space with Essex Highways and builds the crossing to their specification.
Essex Highways consent
You apply to Essex Highways for consent first. We can explain what they need, including a sketch plan with measurements.
Built to specification
Once approved, the crossing is built by a suitably insured contractor with street works (NRSWA) accredited staff, to Essex Highways’ specification.

Are you NHBC registered?
Yes. Boswell Builders is an NHBC registered builder, which means the new homes we build can be covered by a 10-year structural warranty. We are also LABC registered. Ask us about the warranty options for your project.
Can you help with planning permission and building regulations?
We work alongside you, your architect and the local authority to make sure planning and building control approvals are in place before work begins, and we manage inspections throughout the build.
How long does a new build home take?
Every project is different — timescales depend on the size and specification of the house, the site and the approvals needed. We will give you a realistic programme when we quote and keep you updated as the build progresses.
Do you work with self builders?
Yes. If you are building your own home we can deliver the whole project for you or take on specific stages such as groundworks, foundations, brickwork or the structural shell.
Which areas do you cover?
